Verse (Roman transliteration)

Arthamanartham Bhaavaya Nityam, Naasthi Tatah Sukhalesah Satyam Putraadhapi Dhana Bhaajaam Bheetih, Sarvatra Esha Vihaati Reetih

Translation

Reflect constantly that wealth is fraught with evil. There is not the least happiness from it in truth. Even from their own sons, the wealthy live in fear. This is how it always plays out everywhere.

The teaching

Shankara is not saying money is evil — he is saying attachment to money as a source of security is self-defeating. The more wealth you accumulate, the more you have to lose, the more you fear loss, and the more suspicious you become — even of those closest to you. Wealth acquired for its own sake creates anxiety, not safety.

Living this today

Illustrative example: During a regular budget review, distinguish necessary expenses from purchases made to ease comparison. The point is to understand your motives, not to prescribe an income level or a financial plan.
